improve productivity when working from home

How To Improve Your Productivity When Working From Home

Working from home can really have its perks such as no commute, having your home comforts, it can save you money and can give you flexibility, but it does also have some downsides which most of the UK may well be feeling right now as working from home has become the norm.

Here are a few ways in which you can improve productivity when working from home…

Routine

By sticking to your normal routine you will be ensuring that you will be up and ready in good time, your body won’t start to slip into being too relaxed too often which can lead to complacency and you will keep your head in gear. Start with setting your alarm, carrying out a morning routine that includes a shower, breakfast and choosing work clothes and then it’s time to start planning…

Planning

Plan out your day to help you to stick to your assignments and deadlines as well as giving yourself time to break away from it all. List making is an essential tool to keep yourself in check. Make a list with tick boxes and as you achieve each one you can feel that satisfaction as you mark them off. Adding in regular breaks plus lunch will also help with your focus and productivity.

The Right Environment

Having the right environment to work in is vital when trying to improve your productivity when working from home. A sofa in the front room is far from ideal but what will work? Most people find that a dedicated room for work helps with their focus because you are essentially “going to work”. Choose a room where you can have space to have a desk.

Make sure you have some daylight to help with lighting and also your mood. Make your work room comfortable and inviting but ensure that you invest in appropriate seating etc. If space is an issue inside the house, have you ever considered having a room outside? A garden room can make a great addition to your home and one of the most popular ways in which to use one is as a home office.

Not only will this give you the right environment, it will also give you the space and quiet to help you to get on with your work. Best of all, you can close the door at the end of the day and return home which will prevent you from thinking about work even more and should help you to stick to normal working hours.

Remove Distractions

It is far easier to be distracted when working from home because there are all of those niggles in front of you. Maybe the dishes are piling up? Perhaps the children are being too loud? Maybe the house phone keeps ringing or the doorbell goes? And let’s not forget about the temptation of social media! The best thing you can do in order to stay focussed on work is to remove as much of these as you can. It may take some will power but that housework will have to wait because you are technically in “working hours”, unplug phones if needs be, move your home office away from the hub of the home and switch off your mobile phone until you have completed your task.

Avoid The Overwhelm

Possibly one of the most important parts of working from home is to take yourself off for a break when things become a little overwhelming. When you don’t have a colleague to bounce ideas off of or to vent to, tensions can easily build. Take a breath, walk away from the desk, go for a walk if needs be and return with a refreshed outlook. You’ll be amazed at how simple this is but how much of an impact it can have on your productivity.
